Regardless of the type of fishing you do, sometimes the difference between getting a strike or not can be found in making small adjustments. For example, increasing or decreasing your leader length or line diameter will give your bait a different action. Adjusting the bait size may make it more or less attractive depending on the size and temperament of the fish your are targeting. A larger bait could deter smaller fish. Pumping your rod on the retrieve could impart more action to your bait presentation. Letting your bait sit still for just a few seconds more can make a fish less wary about striking or more confident in actually catching your bait. Changing the weight of the jig-head could make it stay in the strike zone longer when retrieving or vary the sink/bounce rate when jigging or bottom fishing. Bottom line, be willing to make adjustments up or down, plus or minus.
